Colorless
The highest color range on the D-to-Z scale. Differences can be subtle and are assessed under controlled grading conditions.

The standard D-to-Z scale evaluates the absence of color in many gem-quality diamonds. D begins the colorless end of the scale; color becomes progressively more noticeable toward Z.
Near Colorless
Often appears substantially colorless face-up depending on the individual stone, shape, setting and viewing conditions.
Faint
Increasing warm tint becomes more apparent. Some buyers intentionally prefer this appearance, especially with warmer metal colors.
Very Light
Noticeable body color within the normal D-to-Z range.
Light
Increasingly visible yellow or brown body color. Fancy-color diamonds are evaluated under a different color-grading system.
Compare color in context.
Shape, cut, size, fluorescence, setting metal and lighting can influence how color appears. Compare diamonds under consistent conditions and use the grading report for the laboratory-assigned grade.
